Notes |
A short stout man stands on tip-toes to take by the shoulders a maidservant with a broom whom he is about to kiss. His wife opens a door and sees the embrace with angry horror. Used as an illustration to Grose's Rules for Drawing Caricaturas (1788). According to George (p. 565), some were probably etched at an earlier stage; lettering appears to have been added to some in preparation for publication in the book. The image in the background of the man between lions is also found in the picture in 'The City Rout', BMSat 5372 Francis Grose (1731 - 1791) wrote and illustrated many successful books on the antiquities of Britain. Responding to the growing interest in the past, he travelled around the country collecting material, publishing illustrations with descriptions to make antiquities and archaelogical remains more intelligible and accessible to his non-specialist readers.
