Notes A very large and impressive separately published lithographic illustration of steamboats on the Mississippi, one of a series of Mississippi River scenes produced by the New York printers Currier & Ives after drawings from life by Frances "Fanny" Palmer. The image depicts a famous race between the paddle ships Natchez and Eclipse, of which Eclipse was the eventual winner. The ships, bellowing plumes of steam and smoke into the moonlit sky, race along the lower reaches of the River, their passengers waving energetically on decks.

Frances Flora Bond Palmer (1812-1876) was an English-born American artist, justifiably celebrated for her work as a pioneering artist of American landscapes and scenes of daily life. She painted over two hundred scenes for the New York based publishers Currier & Ives, many of which were produced by the company as lithographs.

Currier & Ives was a New York based lithographic printers, originally established by Nathaniel Currier in 1835. Ives joined as partner in 1857. The company produced mostly scenes of American life, particularly landscapes, with rural scenes and river scenes being particularly popular with their customers. The firm ceased trading in 1907.
