Plate 51 from Edward Edwards' A Collection of Views and Studies after Nature. A naiad rides upon a porpoise, using her cloak as a sail. Behind, a triton attempts to seize her, whilst another triton resists him. In the background, two other tritons can be seen fighting over a naiad. A Collection of Views and Studies after Nature contained a total of 51 plates; plates 1 -36 were landscape studies, whilst plates 37 - 51 were mainly human figures and heads, some of which were in Greco-Roman style. Edward Edwards (1738 - 1806) Condition: Surface dirt and discolouration to margins. Faint red mark to upper left corner of sky. Tipped to album page. |
