A small-scale mid-twentieth century plan of the city of Bristol, featuring an inset map of the area around the city, and four vignettes of the Clifton Suspension Bridge, Bristol Cathedral, Cabot Tower, and St Mary Redcliffe. This map is one of a decorative series of road maps by artist A.E. Taylor, which were first published by Pratt's Motor Oil Company as promotional posters in 1932. When Pratt's was taken over by Esso in 1936, the maps were reissued in a bound volume titled Pictorial Britain and Ireland. Alfred Edward Taylor (1887-1959) was a British illustrator and artist, best known for his many pictorial maps. In addition to book illustration, much of his work was used as advertising, most famously for Anglo-American Oil Company (later Esso), the Empire Marketing Board, and Eno's Fruit Salt. Condition: Trimmed close to border on all sides. Text on verso. |
