A very rare, separately published, large-scale engraving of the view from the Canon's lodgings at Christ Church. This fine engraving provides a fascinating eighteenth century view of the gardens of the Canon of Christ Church, looking out across 'Broad Walk' and what is now Christ Church College School's playing fields to Magdalen Tower, with 'Dead mans walk' and the tower of Merton College Chapel to the left. James Green (1729-1759) was an engraver, painter, and draughtsman. Working Oxford in the mid-18th century, he was a pupil of the eldest Basire. In 1756 he became the engraver to the University of Oxford and in the following year, engraver to the Society of Antiquaries. He died at just 30 year of age, at which point he was succeeded by his brother Benjamin. Condition: Trimmed within the plate, with slight loss to crest at base of sheet. Pressed centre fold, repaired tear to top right of sheet and image. Minor surface abrasions to top left of sheet. Minor toning and spotting. |
