Text from 'An Illustrative Key to the Political Sketches of H.B.', London 1844: The scene between Henry the Fourth and the Prince of Wales, in which the king reproaches his son for his indecent haste in carrying away the crown under a belief that his father was dead, is familiar to every reader, and is cleverly applied to an interview between the Archbishop of Canterbury and the Bishop of London. The primate had been so very seriously ill that his recovery seemed almost hopeless, and, if under such circumstances, the attention of the public was directed to the question of his successor, it can hardly be doubted that the question was one that occupied the attention of the reverend bench collectively and individually. At length, however, his Grace was pronounced convalescent, and among the distinguished persons who visited him as soon as he had so far recovered as to receive visits, was the Bishop of London, who being one of the prelates supposed to look up to the Archi-episcopal mitre, is playfully represented as giving utterance to those melancholy thoughts to which "the wish was father." |
