An uncommon eighteenth century German map of the Arabian peninsula, this example designed to accompany the Allgemeine Welthistorie of the Gottingen-based historians, Ludwig Albrecht Gebhardi and Franz Dominikus Haberlin. A very similar map, perhaps even an earlier version of this same plate though with a vignette of Mecca in the bottom left, was also used in the German translation of the Koran published by the theologian Friedrich Eberhard Boysen. The map is outlined in hand colour, and the principal cities and towns of the region are picked out in red. The title is enclosed in a floral cartouche, and in the right and left bottom corners of the map are a compass rose and scale respectively. Condition: Central and horizontal folds as issued. Bottom half of left margin trimmed as issued, now reinstated. |
