A large-scale view of the start of the annual Boat Race between the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge at Henley-on-Thames. The two university teams await the umpire's signal, held in place by two teams of men in row-boats. Crowds of people pack the banks of the river and a steamer anchored close by. Signed in image lower left 'J. C. Dollman.' John Charles Dollman (1851–1934) was an English painter and illustrator. Dollman was born in Hove in 1851, but moved to London in order to study at South Kensington and the Royal Academy Schools. After his education, he set up a studio at Bedford Park, London. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1870 to 1912, and was elected as a member of the Royal Watercolour Society in 1913. Dollman was also an illustrator and produced work for magazines such as The Graphic during and after the 1880s. Condition: Vertical creases as issued, additional vertical folds. Some creasing to lower left and upper right. Remnants of pencil notes in lower left inscription space. Repaired tear upper left and repaired puncture lower left. |
