An mezzotint representing Autumn from a rare series of the four seasons by Jacob Gole. The rhyme below the image is a commentary on the Nine Years War, a power conflict from 1688 to 1697 between France and the Grand Alliance, a coalition made up of the Dutch Republic, England, the Habsburg Monarchy, Spain and the Duchy of Savoy. The print shows a full length portrait of a finely dressed man looking off to the right through a window at the rolling hills. In his right hand he holds a bunch of grapes still on a section of vine, with a stool to his left where more grapes have been placed. The text below in Dutch and French reads: Die Rynsche druif, Louis, zegt uden oorlog aan, En pord ons om uvan de wyn berg af te staan. Bien loin de posseder le doux Jus de vendange, Ie m'en trouve prive par celuy de l'Orange. (That Rynse grape, Louis, declares war, And encourage us to give you the Wynberg. Far from possessing the sweet juice of the grape harvest, I find myself deprived of it by that of the Orange.) Jacob Gole (c.1660 - 1724) was a mezzotinter, engraver, publisher, and playing card maker. He was born in France to the cabinet maker Pierre Gole, and around 1684, emigrated to Holland as a Huguenot. Gole had connections with Cornelis Dusart, and is known for publishing prints by Dirk Maas. Hollstein 317 Condition: Two pinholes to top margin. Some surface dirt to sheet.
