Bowles's New Map of the River Thames From its Spring in Gloucestershire, to its Influx into the Sea; with a Table of all the Locks, Wears, and Bridges thereupon: Shewing the Tolls payable at each and their distance by Water from one another.

A horizontal map of the River Thames from its source in Gloucestershire through to its convergence with the sea. Major towns and cities that appear next to the river are listed as well as the counties that the river runs through. At the top centre the map features a table of locks, wears, and bridges and their distances from each other. At the lower left corner is an inset text box containing a brief history of the Thames.

Carington Bowles (1724-1793) was one of the leading print publishers, printers and sellers of the eighteenth century. He apprenticed with his father John Bowles and worked with him as John Bowles & Son from 1753 to 1762, after which he took over his uncle's business in St Paul's Churchyard, London.

Condition: Dissected and laid to linen as issued. Toning to sheets. Inscribed 'John Sharp' in ink to area above text box and top right corner.
