Notes A map of Lorraine, depicting the territory awarded to the King of Poland as consolation following his failed attempt in 1733 to regain his crown. Stanislas Leszczynski, Duc de Lorraine, was placed on the throne of Poland in 1704 by Swedish King Charles XII following the defeat of the occupying Russian Army. Five years later Leszczynski himself was deposed after the Swedish loss to the Russians at the Battle of Poltava. In 1733, he attempted to regain Poland-the conflict lasting five years and again ending in his defeat. However, as consolation, the subsequent Peace Accord of Vienna (1738) awarded Leszczynski the continued use of his title, King of Poland, and life-long governance over Lorraine and Barrois. Here he became a staunch patron of the arts and architecture and a good friend to Voltaire.

The dedication in the title reads: 'Dressee pour la lecture du Memoire de M. Durival l'aine, et dediee au Roy de Pologne, Duc de Lorraine et de Bar'
