Charles II issuing the Declaration of Breda (a manifesto issued in April 1660 by the exiled Charles II in which he outlined his initial terms for the Restoration of the monarchy). Interior of a hall with the king standing at a table on which there is a paper, numerous figures in attendance, four portraits hanging on the wall in background; after Jacob Toorenvliet. This is one from a series of six illustrations on Charles II's voyage to Holland in 1660, engraved by David and Pieter Philippe and Theodor Matham, after Jacob Toorenvliet and Adriaen van de Venne (Muller 2156.1-6). The BM holds five plates. The series was published in various language editions, including an English translation by Sir William Lower. |
