Notes |
From Iconographia; a series of 148 etched plates by Küsel after drawings by Baur. The titlepage reads in Latin: 'Complectens in se Passiones, Miracula, Vitam Christi universam,' or, 'Embracing the passions, the Miracle, the whole life of Christ.' The series was a huge success and went through numerous editions between the years of 1670 and 1702. Melchior Küsel (1626 - 1683) was an engraver and publisher who was a pupil of Matthäus Merian the Elder in Frankfurt. Küsel acquired a large part of the Nachlass of J.W.Baur after his death. For the most part, Küsel's reproductions of Baur's work falls into four categories: the 146 etchings entitled Iconographia (1670); the 42 plates of the 'Pastor Fido' of 1671; the 40 plates of the 'Underschidliche Prospecten' of 1681; and the 151 plates of Ovid's 'Metamorphoses' of 1681 which are copied from Baur's own etched series of 1639/41. Condition: Tipped to album page. Trimmed within plate. |
