A rare and finely engraved early eighteenth century view of Dover, closely modelled on the seventeenth century view of the town by Hermannides. The castle is shown prominently at the top of the view, with the town stretching along the waterfront down to a busy dock at the bottom of the scene. A large compass rose is included in the bottom right corner. Text below image reads: Dover, Lat. Dubris, eine kleine aber importante See-Stadt in der Graffschafft Kent in Engelland, nebst einem Vortrefflichen Hafen, welcher durch ein festes Schloss oder Citadell auf dem Berge bedecket wird. Wohin auch die ordinaire Passage von Calais aus Franckreich nach Engeland gehet. Sie ist eine von den 5. Hafen so Sitz und Stime im Parlement haben. Gabriel Bodenehr (1664-1758) was a German engraver, geographer, and publisher, and a scion of the Augsburg-based Bodenehr family of engravers. Condition: Strong clear impression, with full margins.
