Nelson & Sons began as a small bookselling business in Edinburgh in 1789. Founded by Thomas Neilson (1780-1861) the company name changed to Thomas Nelson in 1818. In 1835, Neilson's son William joined the business, and was followed by his younger son Thomas. The business became successful by reprinting popular authors cheaply. This success lead to the establishment of premises in London and New York. In 1858 the name of the firm changed to Thomas Nelson and Sons. From 1856, colour-printing became a feature of their production and by 1860 the firm was the leading publisher of affordable colour-printed titles.
