O' Donoghue 1 Elizabeth, Queen of Bohemia (1596-1662), Daughter of James I Elizabeth was the eldest daughter of James I, King of England and Scotland. In 1613 she married Frederick, the Elector Palatine. He accepted the throne of Bohemia in 1619, but after a year reigning they were expelled by the army of Emperor Ferdinand II. They lived in exile in Holland from 1621 onwards. Elizabeth's courage in the face of disaster and her subsequent hardships in exile, combined with her beauty, made her a legend in England as 'The Winter Queen'. |
