Notes |
A rare emblematic design, probably to be used as a frontispiece or ex libris. A figure wearing a crown and ermine cloak, is holding a sceptre and pointing at a shield with Andrea Chiavistelli's coat of arms, held by a putt, while another holds up a banderole with Andrea's name and refers to Florence, his city of birth. A view of Florence can be seen in the distance, while the lion and river god in the foreground also refer to the city. Two very similar designs by this artist in the collection of the British Museum (1897,0113.13 & 1897,0113.14.) Inscription to banderole at centre: "Andrea Chiavistelli Firenze" and to stone throne at lower left: "NB" with faded hand written inscription in ink. Cosimo Mogalli (fl. 1667-1726) was an Italian engraver, active in Florence. Ranieri del Pace (1681-1738) was an Italian painter and draftsman, active in Florence. Condition: Trimmed within plate mark. Light staining. |
