Artist: Unknown Publisher: Nippon Mokuhan A rare woodblock print showing the Enryakuji Temple, Hiyeizan (Hieizan), in Kyoto. The scene shows a monk walking towards the viewer, their face obscured by their hat. The bright red of the temple is contrasted next to the dark green of the trees, their trunks partially visible through the fan like leaves. This print was produced as a cover of a dinner menu of the Nippon Yusen Line passenger ship, Taiyo Maru. The menu attached lists the meals offered to the 'Tourist Cabin' on the sailing dated August 21st, 1937. On the verso is a small map of the world indicating where the Nippon Yusen Line ships sailed, red lines marking their routes. The Taiyo Maru frequently sailed on trans-Pacific routes but started it's life as the steam ship Cap Finisterre, a German transatlantic ocean liner, which was transferred to Japan in 1920 as German war reparations, and renamed Taiyo Maru. It served as an auxiliary transport during World War II, most notably transporting Imperial Japanese Navy officers in disguise, on the route to Honolulu for the planned strike and attack on Pearl Harbour. Condition: Menu still attached. Some minor wear to sheet edges. |
