A decorative and relatively scarce county map of Essex, from Samuel Simpson's 'Agreeable Historian' or 'Compleat English Traveller', published by Robert Walker in 1746. The borders of the county and its hundreds are outlined in hand colour, and major cities and towns are picked out in red. The arms of the county are featured in a baroque cartouche in the bottom right, as well as that of the Rt. Hon. Earl of Essex. The maps for Simpson's atlas were based on those featured in Herman Moll's English county atlas of the 1720s. Condition: Trimmed to plate mark at top and right as issued. Vertical folds as issued. |
