Van Orley's engraving illustrates Chapter five of the Gospel of Luke. Whilst the haloed Christ and Peter converse, a myriad of fishermen struggle with a multitude of fish. Jan Van Orley (1665 - 1735) was a draughtsman and occasional etcher. He was also one of the most important and talented tapestry designers of the early eighteenth-century in Brussels. By the time he joined the Brussels painter's guild in November 1709, Van Orley was an established painter. Condition: Tipped to album page. Trimmed to platemark. |
