A crude woodcut portrait of Lutheran theologian Georg Major. The bust portrait shows Major looking off to the left, a slight furrowed brow. He wears a simple fur lined robe, the edge of a frilled collar appears from beneath his beard. The portrait is seen in a decorative oval frame. Georg Major (1502 – 1574) was a Lutheran theologian of the Protestant Reformation. Born in Nuremberg, he attended university in Wittenberg where he was taught by Martin Luther and Philip Melanchthon and in 1541 he started teaching theology. His standing as a theologian increased to such an extent that in the following year he was sent to the 'Conference of Regensburg', a conference held in Bavaria in 1541, during the Protestant Reformation, an attempt to restore religious unity in the Holy Roman Empire between Catholics and Protestants by means of theological debate. He died in Wittenberg in 1574 Condition: Trimmed and tipped to album page. Some creasing to centre of sheet. |
