Large depiction of Victor Emmanuel II, King of Sardinia and previously Duke of Savoy, on horseback alongside his generals. Below the King the battle scene of the siege of Gaeta. The Siege of Gaeta, November 5, 1860 - February 13, 1861 took place in Gaeta, modern day Southern Lazio, and was the concluding event of the war between the Kingdom of Sardinia and the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. Victor Emmanuel II (14 March 1820 – 9 January 1878) was the King of Sardinia from 1849 until 17 March 1861, when he assumed the title King of Italy and became the first king of a united Italy since the 6th century, a title he held until his death in 1878.
