Inscription below image reads: 'H. Welby Esquire who lived 44 years in Grub Street, without being seen by any Person'. George Smeeton was a British publisher and printer active between 1800-1828. His work included, from 1817, reprints of seventeenth century pamphlets, collected together as the 'Historical and Biographical Tracts' in 1820; books and colour frontispieces for Isaac Cruickshank and Sons; and 'The Unique', 1823-4, a collection of portraits and biographical notes. |
