Artist Signature: Shiro Artist Seal: Kasamatsu Publisher: Watanabe Publisher Seal: Round Watanabe 6mm A lifetime impression of Shiro's Hakone Ashinoko no Fuji or Fuji from Lake Ashinoko, Hakone. The print shows a stunning view of Fuji across the water, the white peak reflected in the lake. Four trees frame the scene in the foreground, the dark trunks contrasting against the bright blue of the sky and water. Shiro Kasamatsu (1898-1991) was a student of Kaburagi Kiyokata and worked in Shin Hanga and Sosaku Hanga style. He started creating woodblock prints for the publisher Watanabe in 1919 and by the late 1940s he had designed more than 50 prints for Watanabe publishing house. In the 1950s he published bird and animal prints, landscapes and "famous views" with the publisher Unsodo - all together more than 100 designs. Condition: Two small pin holes to the left margin. |
