Notes A view looking across the expanse of the massive shield volcano of Haleakala on the Hawaiian Island of Maui. The summit of the volcano was named Haleakala "house of the sun" by the early indigenous population due to the alignment of the rising sun over the eastern side of the mountain. According to local mythology, the grandmother of the demigod Ma-ui resides in the crater of Haleakala, it was believed that Maui's grandmother helped him capture the Sun and force it to slow its journey across the sky in order to extend the day.
