Portrait of Elizabeth Seymour as a child, shown in full-length seated beside a pond. Water pours into the pond from a carved winged head. Elizabeth, wearing a dress with short, bunched sleeves, points towards a small dog set to the right of the composition. A curtain falls along the left side of the image, and the right opens to a view of a landscape. Elizabeth Seymour (née Percy), Duchess of Somerset (1667-1722) was the only child, and therefore sole heiress, of Joceline Percy, 11th Earl of Northumberland. She was one of the closest friends of Queen Anne, and acted as her lady of the bedchamber. Elizabeth married three times, firstly to Henry Cavendish, Earl of Ogle, secondly to Thomas Thynne of Longleat, and finally to Charles Seymour, 6th Duke of Somerset. Alexander Browne (1659 - 1706) was an auctioneer, dealer, drawing master, and a publisher of mezzotints. Browne succeeded Richard Tompson in early mezzotint publishing. Sir Peter Lely (1618-1680) was a portrait painter and Principal Painter to Charles II. Born of Dutch parents, he trained in Haarlem; came to London in the 1640s and quickly established a reputation as a portraitist.
