A late-Victorian geological map of Herefordshire and Monmouthshire, from Reynolds' Geological Atlas of Great Britain. Geological bands are washed in original hand colour, and roads and railways are shown. The plates for the geological atlas were based on a suite of county maps originally drafted by Emslie for Reynolds' Travelling Atlas in 1848. In 1864, the original plates were reissued as lithographs, with geological information added in hand colour. The atlas was a considerable success, and continued to be reissued by Reynolds and Stanford until the 1910s. John Emslie (1813-1875) was a British draughtsman, illustrator, and engraver, particularly known for his long standing collaboration with the London-based publisher James Reynolds. Their most notable contribution was a series of 250 illustrations with explanatory text published as the Introduction to Natural Philosophy. Condition: Central horizontal fold, as issued. Time toning to central fold, and edges of sheet. Blank on verso. |
