A Portrait of William VIII (1806-1884), Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg, and subsequently, Duke of Brunswick. He is here shown in the uniform of a Prussian Major, a rank which he recieved in 1823. He was made regent in 1830 following the deposition of his brother, Charles II, who was authoritarian and corrupt, and made himself Duke in 1831. William left the government to his ministers and lived in his territories outside the Duchy at Oels, remaining unmarried, a position, which lead to a sucession crisis that was not resolved until 1913, 29 years after William's death.
