From Bunbury's Academy for Grown Horsemen. A smartly dressed man of vulgar appearance rides (left to right) a horse which starts forward. He looks smiling to the right; his right leg is thrust forward almost horizontally, his right hand is on the horse's neck. Henry William Bunbury (1750 - 1811) Illustrator and amateur draughtsman, well-known as a designer of satirical prints. From a landed family, educated Westminster and Cambridge. Grand tour 1769-70. Honorary exhibitor at RA from 1771, equerry to Duke of York in 1780s; retired to Keswick in 1799. His designs were etched by Darly and Bretherton, and (from 1780s) Dickinson. William Dickinson (1746 - 1823). Mezzotinter; began his career with Bowles and was awarded premium of Society of Arts in 1767. In 1773 he set up as his own publisher and from1779-81 in partnership with Thomas Watson; in 1797 went bankrupt, and emigrated to Paris where he died in 1823. Condition: Minor tears to the left hand and lower margins. |
