Josiah Boydell (1752 - 1817) was an English mezzotint engraver, print publisher, and portrait and history painter. Born in Flint in 1752, he was the nephew of Alderman John Boydell. Working in the firm from 1773, Boydell later became John's partner, and after his death, the sole proprietor of the firm. Boydell entered the Royal Academy Schools in 1769. He exhibited at the SA 1776-79. On his death in 1817 the firm was closed and much of the stock auctioned. Hurst, Robinson & Co advertised themselves as successors to Boydell. John Boydell (1719-1804) was a successful and influential printseller and engraver. Boydell's Shakespeare Gallery is credited with changing the course of English painting by creating a market for historical and literary works. He also encouraged the development of engraving in England with, among other things, his prints illustrating scenes from Shakespearean plays. In 1773, his nephew Josiah Boydell (1752-1817) became his business partner and later his successor, trading as J. & J. Boydell.
