A small but interesting French map of the European part of the Ottoman empire, encompassing Greece and the Balkans, southern Ukraine, Turkey, and Cyprus, engraved by Faure for the 'Geographie Universelle Exposee dans les Differentes metodes' by P. Buffier de la 'Compagnie de Jesus.' Borders and coastlines are outlined in hand colour, and the title is enclosed in a baroque cartouche crowned with an array of flags and weapons. Claude Buffier (25th May 1661 – 17th May 1737) was a theologian, geographer, and Jesuit brother from Warsaw, Poland, who worked in Paris. Aside from his theological works, Buffier authored a number of geographic texts, among them the 'Géographie Universal,' which was posthumously published in Paris in 1749 which ran to several editions. Condition: Vertical folds as issued. Trimmed to border on right edge, as issued, now remargined. Blank on verso. |
