Notes |
Etched outline state before mezzotinting, from 'Liber Veritatis or a collection of two hundred prints after the original designs of Claude Le Lorrain ... executed by R. Earlom'. Richard Earlom (British, 1743 - 1822) made a set of prints after Claude's "Book of Truth" (drawings from his own paintings) while it was in the collection of the Dukes of Devonshire at Chatsworth; they were bound into an album together with a frontispiece portrait of Claude and five unrelated drawings, bringing the total number of drawings by Claude contained in it to 200. The Earlom set was engraved between 1774 and 1777, published by Boydell in two volumes in 1777, each containing 100 prints, numbered 1-200. A third volume of 100 prints was published by Boydell in 1819, which was numbered separately, 1-100, and contained Earlom's prints after other drawings by Claude in various collections.
