A view of the Grove of the Domes at Versailles, drawn and engraved by Jacques Rigaud for his important series of engravings 'Recueil choisi des plus belles vues des palais, des chateaux.' or 'Selected Collection of the most beautiful views of the palaces, castles and royal dwellings of Paris and surroundings', published in Paris between 1729 and 1738. Jacques Rigaud (1681 - 1754) was an engraver who specialised in topographical views after his own drawings. Born in France he obtained a general privilege for his oeuvre in 1728 which he published under the title 'Recueil choisi des plus belles vues des palais, châteaux et maisons royales de Paris et des environs'. He worked in England from the 1730's onwards. Condition: Toning from previous mount, foxing to sheet, tape residue to verso. |
