Robert William Wallis (1794 - 1878) was an English engraver of topographical and historical subjects. Often employed in an illustrative capacity, Wallis engraved works for The Amulet as well as Charles Heath's Picturesque Annual and Robert Jennings's Landscape Annual. William Henry Bartlett (1809 - 1854) was a British landscape artist famous for his views of all parts of the world, which appeared in a series of travel volumes issued in the nineteenth century. J. S. Virtue & Co. Limited was a major book and print publishing firm founded by George Virtue (1794 - 1868) in the 1820s. In 1848 it acquired The Art Union which became The Art Journal. In 1855 James Sprent Virtue (1829 - 1892) took over his father's business (he had been working in the New York branch since 1848) and initiated the series of prints after great 'galleries' of pictures including the Royal Collection, Vernon Collection and the Turner Collection. |
