Notes |
View of Magdalen Hall, from James Ryman's Illustrations of Oxford. George Hollis (1792-1842) was a well-known artist and engraver who worked in Oxford in the first half of the nineteenth century. Many of his engravings were published by James Ryman, a printseller on the High Street, Oxford, active between 1836 and 1865. Hollis's views were published separately from 1819 before being bound as a volume with descriptive text in 1839. Illustrations of Oxford is a comparatively rare work with some uncommon views of the colleges to which celebrated artists like T. S. Boys, Frederick Nash and J. S. Prout made relevant contributions. John Chessell Buckler (1793-1894) was an architect and antiquary. His work included restorations of country houses and buildings at the University of Oxford. He was the son of John Buckler (1770 –1851), an outstanding architectural draughtsman and Bailiff for Magdalen College's Southwark Estate for sixty years, whose views in Oxford, especially Magdalen College, rank amongst the finest ever produced.
