A Portrait of Marie Clotilde, Queen of Sardinia, Princess of Piedmont and Duchess of Savoy (1759-1802), wife of Charles Emmanuel IV of Sardinia. Although a political match, Charles Emmanuel and Marie Clothilde were devoted to each other, the happiness of their marriage marred only by their lack of progeny. Indeed, following Marie-Clothilde's death, Charles Emmanuel was so moved and distraught that he abdicated and moved to Frascati, where he met Charles Benedict Stuart, Cardinal-Duke of York, whose death in 1807 meant that Charles Emmanuel became the last Jacobite pretender to the the throne of England.
