Matthias Servaes von Ottenheim was an Anabaptist martyr who was born in 1536 in the district of Mayen, near Koblenz, Germany. Servaes' steadfast devotion to his faith was in the eyes of the authorities an obstinate adherence to heresy which merited death. In June of 1565, Servaes was executed. The print of this death appeared in a seminal work of Tieleman Jansz van Braght's, entitled the Martelaersspiege, or Martyr's Mirror. Dealing with the theme of Christian martyrdom from the time of Christ to the seventeenth century, the first edition was published in 1560. The second edition of van Braght's Martyrs' mirror was published in 1685 at Amsterdam by Hieronymus Sweerts, Jan ten Hoorn, Jan Bouman, and Daniel van den Dalen. This edition is noteworthy because of the series of 104 etchings produced by Jan Luyken (1649-1712) depicting the acts of martyrdom in visceral clarity. |
