A female figure is seen in full length, stood looking off to the left. She wears a dress half in red satin and half in black velvet. The dress is trimmed with gold coins and playing cards, with an aigrette on her shoulder holding a fan of cards. She wears one red and one black shoe and a croupier's rake can be seen in her right hand. Ardern Holt's Fancy Dresses Described; or, What to Wear at Fancy Balls was a comprehensive book created as a guide to aid with fancy dress ideas when attending themed parties. First published in 1883, the book was incredibly popular and was printed in various editions through until the early 20th century. The book starts with the exclamation 'But, what are we to wear?' and continues 'This is the first exclamation on receipt of an invitation to a Fancy Ball, and it is to assist in answering such questions that this volume has been compiled'.
