Inscription below title reads: ex Collectione Arundeliana, Ao 1647. 31 Dece: Wenceslaus Hollar (1607-1677), a Bohemian exile, was employed by the Earl of Arundel as artist-in-residence to make drawings of his extensive art collection. Some of these drawings are now the only information on the contents of that impressive collection. In 1642 the Earl of Arundel left England for the Continent, never to return. The turmoil of the civil war caused Hollar to move to Antwerp in 1644, where he worked until 1652. Having taken his sketchbooks with him, Hollar was able to make engravings from the drawings of the Arundel collection. There are three issues of this series; the first series is unnumbered, the second series is numbered in the upper right corner and has the address of F. de Wit, whilst the third series contains the address and different numbers. Charles de Solier, sieur de Morette (1480-1564) was a French soldier and diplomat who was painted by Holbein the Younger (1497-1543) whilst visiting London in 1535. The portrait is now displayed in The Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister in Dresden, Germany. Pennington 1470 i/ii |
