View of the north face of the Divinity School, facing the entrance to the Sheldonian Theatre. 37/50, inscribed and signed in pencil. Valerie Thornton (1931 - 1991) was a London born painter and printmaker. Although evacuated to Montreal during WWII, Thornton returned to London in 1944 and began her art training in 1949 at the Byam Shaw School of Drawing and Painting. She continued on to train at Regent Street Polytechnic, and went on to work in Paris and New York. During the 1950's, Thornton's work was exhibited as part of the Regent Street Group at the Walkers Galleries on Bond Street. Not only was she a member of the Philadelphia Print Club and a founding member of the Printmakers Council, but she was also elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Painters-Etchers and Engravers. Condition: Good, clean impression with full margins. |
