Series: Joreishiki: Etiquette and Manners for Women Artist Signature: Nobukazu Artists Seal: Yosai Publisher: Nagamatsu Sakugoro A traditional bijin themed triptych depicting ladies practising drawing and tea ceremony. On the left panel one beauty is sat at a table holding out a fan she has just painted with a floral design, an attendant in the background is retrieving a bundle of paper from a cabinet. In the centre panel one beauty is stood in a highly decorative purple kimono, she, and two others, are looking at the fan held out by the other beauty. On the right panel a beauty is preparing a tea ceremony. Nobukazu Yosai (Watanabe) (1874 - 1944) was a Japanese woodblock artist active during the late 19th and early 20th century. He was a student of Chikanobu Yoshu (1838-1912), Chikanobu's influence visible in Nobukazu's prints of bijin-ga and traditional domestic scenes and customs. He produced a large number of battle themed triptychs during the Sino-Japanese (1894 - 1895) and Russo-Japanese wars (1904 - 1905) which he was most known for. Condition: Colours faded.
