Artist seal: Sozan Publisher: Watanabe Reference: Novelli, Mauro, Itō Sōzan, itosozan.com, WT-12. A kacho-e print of an owl perched on a branch. The scene shows the owl in the centre of the print, resting on a small branch that cuts across the view. A large trunk of a tree is to the right, the trees green leaves seen above the owl. Ito Sozan was a lesser known print designer in the large group of artists who worked for the publisher Watanabe Shozaburo. His speciality was bird and flower prints, or kacho-e, although he also designed some bijin-ga prints. Sozan began working with Watanabe in 1919 and continued to design prints through to 1926. This happens to be the same year that another kacho-e artist, Ohara Shoson (also known as Ohara Koson), started working for Watanabe. It is not known if Shoson was hired to replace Sozan, or why Sozan stopped designing prints at this time. Watanabe's 1936 catalogue included 28 prints by Sozan, but Watanabe did not provide any biographical information on him. Condition: Some minor toning to sheet. A minor crease to the lower right corner. Some glue residue to verso top edge. |
