A large and decorative map or southern India and Sri Lanka, from the 1733 Homann Heirs edition of the Maior Atlas Superiore. The map is ornamented in full and beautiful hand colour, in Homann's characteristic pink, green, and yellow pastel palette. Cities, towns, mountain ranges, rivers, and reefs are shown pictorially, and along the coast, the various trading posts of the colonial powers are demonstrated by the flags of the English, Danish, French, Dutch, and Portuguese. Roads and trading routes are marked, most of which lead to and from Colconda (Golkonda, old capital of Qutb Shahi Sultanate) and Goa, and in the centre of the Carnatic a merchant is shown with his camel. In the bottom left corner a large ornate title cartouche features an illustration of an elephant, a leopard, the national costumes of various indigenous peoples, and the mercantile wealth of India. Johann Baptist Homann (20th March 1664 - 1st July 1724) was a German engraver and cartographer, and the Imperial Geographer to the Holy Roman Emperor Charles VI. In 1702 he opened a publishing house in Nuremberg, and his maps often make reference to his membership of the Prussian Royal Academy of Sciences and his imperial patronage. Upon his death, his maps passed to the Homann Heirs company and reprinted many times before the company closed in 1848. Condition: Central horizontal fold, as issued. Light horizontal and vertical creases. Trimmed close to plate mark on left and right sides of sheet, as issued. Minor surface creasing. Minor ink staining on verso, otherwise blank. |
