Founded in 1152 originally a Cistercian monastery was part of King Henry VIII dissolution of the monasteries in 1539. In 1542 it was handed to Thomas Cranmer until his execution in 1556 in Oxford when it was returned to the crown. Kirkstall Abbey attracted attention from artists such as J.M.W. Turner on his first tour of Yorkshire in 1797 and today it remains as grade 1 listed ruins.
