Artist signature: Shogetsu Publisher: Kobayashi Kojiro A classic bijin, or beauties, triptcyh depicting ladies being taught various etiquette activities. The scene shows three beauties in each panel, each learning a different skill. On the left the three beauties are learning brushwork, tea making, and miniature zen garden making. In the centre panel they are learning kimono folding, bonsai tree pruning, and origami. In the right panel the three are practising painting, ink work, and tea ceremony. All the figures are wearing beautiful kimonos with intricate patterns and bright colours. Toshu Shogetsu (fl.1850-1900) was a Japanese artist active during the mid to late 19th century. Little is known about Shogetsu, his work consisting mainly of traditional bijin scenes. Condition: Colours faded. Light wear to corners and sheet edges. |
