From Robert John Thornton's Sexual System of Linnaeus. Francis Cotes (1726-1770) trained under portrait painter George Knapton and soon afterwards established himself as a highly fashionable painter. He initially concentrated on portraits in pastel and crayon, although he later extended his working practice to include oil painting. He frequently had engravings made after his portraits, which enabled them to reach a far greater public and gain him widespread recognition. By the 1770s he was one of the most fashionable and sought after portrait painters in London. Cotes was among the founding members of the Royal Academy and he went on to become director of the Society of Artists, at whose shows he had exhibited since 1760. Giovanni Vendramini (1769 - 1839) was an Italian printmaker and publisher of his own prints. Born in Roncade, near Bassano in northern Italy, he came to England as a young man and trained as an engraver with Francesco Bartolozzi. He travelled to Russia, but spent most of his career in London. He is known for working with Schiavonetti on the 'Cries of London' series after Francis Wheatley.
