Portrait of the fictional character Sophia Primrose, shown half-length and resting her right arm upon a fence. Set in profile, Sophia gazes thoughtfully off to the left. She wears a simple dress, and a straw hat with ribbons. Proof before title and inscription. Sophia Primrose is a primary character in Oliver Goldsmith's The Vicar of Wakefield, written between 1761 and 1762, and published in 1766. This mezzotint is from a series of ten portraits that illustrated the characters in Goldsmith's novel. Edward Fisher (1722- c. 1782) was born in Dublin, moving to London in 1758 where he worked in the studio of engraver James McArdell. The following year he was selected by Sir Joshua Reynolds to produce a mezzotint engraving of his portrait of Augustus Keppel. Fisher went on to engrave nearly thirty more of Reynold's paintings. A member of the Society of Artists, throughout the 1760s and 1770s Fisher regularly exhibited engraved portraits after a number of painters. Chaloner Smith 64 i/ii, Lennox-Boyd i/ii Ex.Col.: Hon.
