A relatively uncommon view of the City of Oxford from the south east, from Robson's Picturesque View of the English Cities. Inscribed below title with 'To THOMAS GRIMSTONE BUCKNALL ESTCOURT, ESQ. M.A: M.P. for the University of Oxford, this plate is inscribed by J. BRITTON.' George Fennell Robson (1788-1833) was a British watercolour painter and printmaker. He specialised in scenic views of the English counties and the Scottish Highlands. Major Samuel Barenger (1776-1837) was a British topographical engraver, who often signed his work under his second name, Samuel. His most well known works are a series of views of county houses after drawings by Neale, though he also engraved sporting scenes after paintings by his brother James Barenger. His mother, Mary, was also likely the sister of the engraver William Woollett. Condition: Large tear to top margin, not affecting image. Foxing and time toning to sheet. |
