A scarce hand coloured aquatint depicting a crowd gathered outside the Audit House in Southampton, celebrating the christening of the eldest son of Queen Victoria, Albert Edward, then the Prince of Wales, and later King Edward VII. The baptism occurred in St. George's Chapel in Windsor, but the facade of the Audit House in Southampton was decorated with a large illuminated piece, featuring the initials and symbols of Victoria and Albert, and the Prince of Wales. He was married to the Danish Princess Alexandra. W. Carpenter (fl. 1841) was a British printmaker and publisher in Southampton, little is known about his life, but his name appears on a few prints around the early 1840's, as an artist and print publisher.
