Handwritten inscription beneath plate reads: To Walter Millard from F. L. Griggs, Aug: 1911. Emery Walker (1851-1933) was a British master-printer, typographer and engraver. He was one of the leading figures in the Arts and Crafts Movement, and the revival of engraving. Walker helped to found the Kelmscott Press, and was later a partner of T. J. Cobden-Sanderson in the Doves Press, where he was responsible for much of the successful work produced. Frederick Landseer Griggs (1876-1938) was an English etcher, architectural draughtsman, illustrator, and early conservationist, associated with the late flowering of the Arts and Crafts movement in the Cotswolds. Born in Hitchin, Hertfordshire, from 1900 he worked as an illustrator of topographical books. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1897 to 1903, and was one of the first etchers to be elected to full membership in 1931. In 1903 he settled at Dover's House, in Chipping Campden in the Cotswolds. Here, he established the Dover's House Press, which printed late proofs of the etchings of Samuel Palmer. He collaborated with Ernest Gimson and the Sapperton group of craftsmen in architectural and design work in the area. During the 1920s and 30s, he was an influential leader of the British etching revival. Condition: RIBA stamp in lower centre of sheet. Discolouration and tearing to edges of sheet, not affecting image. |
